I can’t count the number of seniors who have misconceptions about colors and patterns for their senior session. Either they are afraid of color and choose only neutrals, or they bring a kaleidoscope of bright patterns and colors that clash and aren’t flattering. I’m going to break down of the misconceptions and show you how to style colors and patterns to get the best look possible! First, don’t be afraid of color and patterns! When used correctly, bright, bold colors can pop against a clean white background or the beautiful outdoor colors of spring and fall. Patterns can also be used in a flattering and lovely way that complement your features instead of distracting. The trick is combining them in the right way.
Using layers and textures – This is a good intro to mixing things up. If you tend to wear more neutrals, try layering your solid colors with printed scarves (like the photo on the left below), which can boost a simple outfit to a more stylish look. Using textures like nubby sweaters, lace tops with a sleek jacket, or a felt hat can add visual interest without being overwhelming. A “pattern” doesn’t always mean a giant floral or aztec print. A pattern can be as simple as a stripe or a fabric texture.
Accessories – These can be simple pieces such as monogrammed necklace below or bolder statement pieces like the boho felt hat, or a bright scarf. It is a great way for the more traditional gals to add a little interest to their outfits. Other accessories to think about are bracelets and even nail color. (While we’re on the topic, please come to your session with clean, trimmed nails in a non-distracting color. A french manicure or clear gloss are great ways to have pretty nails!). Remember that I am here to offer help with everything from outfits to jewelry, and I also offer my clients the option of working with a professional hair and makeup artist.
Shoes – who doesn’t love a fun pair of shoes? Shoes can add a cool, edgy look to your outfit or provide a pop of color or interest to more basic pieces. One tip – if your shoes aren’t the most comfortable for walking be sure to bring an extra pair to walk around in as we move from location to location!
Don’t be afraid to mix things up with colors and patterns, keeping in mind the overall look you want, and how distracting the print or pattern is. If you have a plaid dress, like above left, keep your accessories small and simple. If you’re wearing all one color, like the second photo from the left, draw attention to one statement piece like red shoes! Remember to provide ONE focal point, and not 3 or 4 distracting elements.
